The Natural Design Story

The Tile Decides the Color of the Water

Pool water has no color of its own. What the eye sees comes from the tile below it, the depth of the pool, the angle of the sun, the surrounding landscape and the water chemistry. The same tile can read differently from one project to the next and from morning to evening.

Natural Series colors are grouped by the water effect they create, from clear blue and tropical turquoise to deep lagoon green and soft Mediterranean neutrals. Each color is produced in several faces that are blended randomly on site, so the pool floor and walls show the gentle variation of natural stone.

Unlike natural stone, the porcelain body does not absorb pool water, resists pool chemicals and keeps its color under UV exposure.

Edge Detail by Pool Type

Match the Edge System to the Circulation Design

Skimmer Pools

Water is drawn off through skimmers about 6–8 in. below the deck. Specify flat coping, or pool coping where a raised edge is wanted.

Perimeter-Overflow Pools

Water spills into a perimeter gutter. Specify pool coping or one-piece coping with flexible, one-piece or concealed gutter grates.

Slot-Overflow Pools

Water drains through a narrow slot, with no visible grate. Specify slot-overflow coping and edge tile matched to the deck tile.

Infinity-Edge Pools

Water spills over a lowered edge into a catch basin. Specify infinity-edge tile in the pool tile color or the deck color.

Installation Guidance

Manufacturer Recommendations for Submerged Installation

Substrate & Setting

  • Waterproof the shell, then wait at least 5 days after waterproofing before tiling. Leak-test the pool shell before tile installation.
  • The manufacturer specifies a C2TE S1 deformable cementitious adhesive (EN 12004). In US practice, use an improved modified mortar (ANSI A118.15) rated for submerged use by its manufacturer.
  • Comb the adhesive in straight lines with a notched trowel for full coverage with no voids. Seat each tile with a rubber mallet.
  • Leave at least 3/8 in. (1 cm) at walls and plan movement joints. In the US, follow TCNA EJ171.

Joints, Grout & Layout

  • SeraPool Natural tile is rectified: set with a 1/8 in. (3 mm) joint, as the manufacturer specifies. Protect tile edges from impact during installation.
  • Grout no sooner than 24 hours after setting. Use a flexible, pool-rated grout approved by the setting-material manufacturer.
  • Blend tile from several boxes and lay all faces randomly. Do not break the face set into separate areas.
  • Coping is designed for a 5% slope toward the overflow gutter. Cut porcelain with diamond tools, and cut complex shapes by waterjet.
Product suitability, slip resistance, waterproofing, substrate preparation, drainage, pool chemistry, climate exposure, installation method and local code requirements must be confirmed for each project. Consult qualified design, engineering, waterproofing and installation professionals before final specification.
